EURO CUP SEMI FINAL ENGLAND vs DENMARK

England are a win away from setting up a dream home Euro 2020 final but first they must beat Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday.

The Danes have something that the English do not have … a European Championships gold medal to their names. Four years before now England coach Gareth Southgate’s infamous missed penalty against Germany, it was the Danes who wrote their own fairytale with a win at Euro 92.

England, on the other hand, suffered semi-final heartbreak at the last World Cup and have not made the final of a top-tier event since they won the World Cup in 1966.

Southgate’s men downed Germany and then smashed Ukraine to set up this tie while Denmark easily brushed aside Wales before edging the Czech Republic.

PREVIEW

All that will count for little when England face Denmark in the second semi-final of Euro 2020 at Wembley.

Southgate is likely to resume action with a  4-2-3-1 formation and while he has rung the changes throughout this event, he is likely to start Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips as his defensive shield. Luke Shaw remains the frontrunner to start at left back while Manchester United bound Jadon Sancho may earn another start after impressing against Ukraine.

Harry Kane’s goal drought is a thing of the past and Raheem Sterling has popped up with inspiration in nearly every game. One would imagine that they have far too much in the tank for their opposition especially at home.

Denmark, who have won only four of their 21 official games against England, have no injury concerns and while most likely send out the same starting lineup.

“Denmark are a great team,” said England skipper Harry Kane.

“We played them in the Nations League twice last year, and we didn’t win one game – one draw, one loss. But we need to try to focus on ourselves; it is a semi-final at our national stadium and we’ve got to use all those positives to worry about us.

“We know if we get it right and play how we know we can then we have a great opportunity to get to a final. It’s going to be incredible.”

The match kicks off at 20 UCT
