Man City vs Man United will lock horns at Wembley Stadium on Saturday evening for a chance to win the Community Shield ahead of the new 2024/25 English Premier League campaign.

City booked their spot in the contest after lifting the Premier League title for a fourth season in a row as United claimed the FA Cup title over the Cityzens to set up the clash.

This will be the eighth time in the history of the Community Shield that the match has been a repeat of the previous season’s FA Cup final, after 1957 (Man Utd vs Aston Villa), 1977 (Man Utd vs Liverpool), 1985 (Everton vs Man Utd), 1986 (Everton vs Liverpool), 1988 (Liverpool vs Wimbledon), 2007 (Man Utd vs Chelsea) and 2017 (Arsenal vs Chelsea).

Of the last eight occasions the Community Shield has been between the previous season’s champions and FA Cup winners, the team to have won the FA Cup has won the shield seven times, with the exception being Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Chelsea in 2018, which of course bodes well for Erik ten Hag’s side after their 2-1 victory over their neighbours in May.

City will be hoping to end the hoodoo in the league curtain-raiser given they haven’t won any of the last three after defeats to Leicester City (2021), Liverpool (2022) and Arsenal (2023). Only Manchester United (1998 to 2001) have lost the Community Shield in four consecutive years.

Manchester United know what it takes to win the competition as they are the most successful side with 21 gongs and they have won the trophy in their last four appearances.

What time does Man City vs Man United start?

The match is scheduled to kick off on Saturday 10 August from 15:00 UK time at Wembley Stadium.

Man City vs Man United Team News

Both teams should have a majority of their players available for the 24/25 league curtain-raiser as they look to get the first available title.

However, Man City are set to be without four key stars as Euro 2024 finalists Rodri, John Stones, Phil Foden and Kyle Walker are all yet to start their pre-season training.

United will miss the services of new signing Leny Yoro and striker Rasmus Hojlund who are both out due to injury.

New No11 Joshua Zirkzee will compete with Jadon Sancho to start up front in Hojlund’s absence.

Defensive worries persist with Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Will Fish and Victor Lindelof all carrying issues in the past week.

This will be the third time Manchester City and Manchester United have met in the Community Shield with United winning both previous matchups, 1-0 in 1956 and 3-2 in 2011.

However, City won both Premier League contests last season, winning 3-0 at Old Trafford before completing the double with a 3-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium.

United on their part earned the win in May’s FA Cup final between the pair, with goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Mainoo securing the trophy for Ten Hag’s men, despite Jérémy Doku’s late goal back.

In terms of pre-season, it has been a mixed bag for both. Man City lost to Celtic and Milan, before drawing with Barcelona and beating Chelsea.

Man Utd lost to Rosenborg, Arsenal and Liverpool, but earned victories against Rangers and Real Betis.
