Manchester United have officially sacked manager Ruben Amorim, bringing an abrupt end to his turbulent 14‑month spell at Old Trafford. The announcement came on Monday morning, less than 24 hours after the Portuguese coach launched a blistering critique of the club’s hierarchy following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United.

A Tenure Defined by Struggle and Controversy

Amorim was appointed in November 2024 with high expectations, having built an impressive reputation at Sporting CP. But his time at United was marred by inconsistent performances and an inability to implement his preferred 3‑4‑3 system in the Premier League.

During his 63 matches in charge, United won just 24, drew 18 and lost 21 — the worst win percentage (32%) of any Manchester United manager in the Premier League era.

Key struggles included:

  • A disastrous 15th‑place finish in the 2024–25 season — United’s lowest since 1974.
  • A Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in Bilbao last May.
  • Early cup exits and inconsistent league form, including dropped points against sides in the relegation zone.

Despite improvements this season — with the team currently sixth — club leadership concluded there were “not enough signs of evolution or progress.”

Financial Implications for Manchester United

The sacking will come at a significant financial cost. Amorim is owed the remaining 18 months of his contract, with reports estimating the payout at around £9.75 million. United had already spent heavily extracting him from Sporting CP and compensating Erik ten Hag before him.

The decision underscores the club’s continued struggles to stabilise leadership since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, with Amorim becoming yet another short‑lived managerial appointment.

What Comes Next for United?

With a challenging run of fixtures ahead — including matches against Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham — Fletcher inherits a squad in flux, but still capable of pushing for European qualification. United’s hierarchy will now look to reset the project once again in the summer.

Amorim’s exit marks not only the end of a tumultuous chapter but also raises renewed questions about United’s long‑term sporting strategy, leadership clarity, and recruitment model.

Darren Fletcher Steps In as Interim Manager

The club confirmed that former United midfielder and current U18 coach Darren Fletcher will take charge on an interim basis, beginning with Wednesday’s Premier League clash away at Burnley. A permanent appointment is not expected before the summer, with United now assessing long‑term options.
