The 2026 Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat delivered one of the most dramatic, chaotic, and unforgettable conclusions in tournament history. Senegal defeated hosts Morocco 1–0 after extra time, clinching their second AFCON title, but the football itself was only half the story. The final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium will be remembered for walkouts, VAR storms, furious protests, fan unrest, and a last‑gasp penalty fiasco that shook African football.

The match began at breakneck pace. Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou made key early saves, denying Pape Gueye and Nicolas Jackson, while Morocco nearly struck before the break when Nayef Aguerd came close with a powerful effort. Senegal, missing suspended captain Kalidou Koulibaly, remained structurally disciplined, reflecting the defensive solidity that had seen them concede only one goal in their five previous matches.

Second‑Half Turning Points: VAR, Controversy, and Boiling Tensions

The second half descended into chaos. In the 94th minute, Senegal thought they had broken the deadlock when Abdoulaye Seck headed off the post and Ismaïla Sarr buried the rebound—but the referee ruled the goal out for a foul, a decision many contested. VAR upheld the call, inflaming Senegal’s frustration.

Just moments later, VAR intervened again—this time awarding Morocco a penalty after El Hadji Malick Diouf was deemed to have his hands on Brahim Díaz inside the box deep in stoppage time. The awarding of the penalty came in the 24th added minute, well beyond typical stoppage time.

Fury erupted and Senegal’s manager Pape Thiaw instructed his players to leave the pitch in protest, and a significant number returned to the tunnel. Meanwhile, clashes broke out in the stands between Senegalese supporters and local security, with projectiles thrown and police forming barriers to prevent pitch incursions.

For nearly 15–20 minutes, the match was suspended. Only after Sadio Mané personally urged teammates to return did Senegal re‑emerge to continue the match.

The Penalty Fiasco: A Panenka Gone Wrong

After the long delay, all eyes were on Brahim Díaz—the tournament’s top scorer. But his decision to attempt a Panenka was disastrous. Senegal keeper Édouard Mendy easily caught the weak chip, triggering explosive noise from the away section and disbelief among Moroccan fans.

The miss shifted momentum entirely. Senegal, re‑energized and enraged, pushed the match into extra time.

Extra Time, Final Whistle & Trophy Lift!

Just four minutes into extra time, Senegal found their moment.

Sadio Mané won the ball in midfield and fed Idrissa Gana Gueye, who released Pape Gueye. The Villarreal midfielder muscled off Achraf Hakimi and fired a brilliant left‑footed strike into the top corner, leaving Bounou helpless and silencing the 66,526 Moroccan fans in stunned disbelief.

Morocco nearly equalized when Aguerd struck the crossbar in the second period of extra time, but Senegal held firm until the final whistle.

The match ended 1–0, crowning Senegal AFCON champions for the second time after their 2021 triumph. Suspended captain Kalidou Koulibaly, in full kit, was handed the trophy by FIFA President Gianni Infantino before passing it to Sadio Mané—symbolically closing what might be his last AFCON appearance.

Morocco, making their first final since 2004, were left devastated as their 50‑year wait for a continental title painfully continued.
