Lech Poznan v KI Klaksvik

One of the standout first-leg ties takes place in Poland, where reigning Ekstraklasa champions Lech Poznan host Faroe Islands giant-killers KI Klaksvik. Poznan will lean on their home support to build a multi-goal advantage before the potentially difficult trip to the North Atlantic.

Not since 2020/21 have Lech Poznan competed above the Conference League, though they reached the quarter-finals of that competition last season. They open the new Ekstraklasa campaign with four points from their first two matches.

Despite their underdog status, KI Klaksvik carry genuine European pedigree — they reached the Conference League group stage in 2023/24, collecting four points against Lille and Olimpija Ljubljana. Domestically, they sit top of the Faroese league on goal difference after 17 matches, having conceded just 12 goals and gone seven consecutive games without conceding more than once.

Benfica v Hearts

A classic David-versus-Goliath encounter. Benfica, who finished third in the 2025/26 Primeira Liga, arrive in this round after a commanding 6-2 aggregate victory over Swiss Super League side St. Gallen, capped with an emphatic 5-0 home win.

Heart of Midlothian finished second in the Scottish Premiership last season but began their 2026/27 campaign with a 2-1 away defeat to Aberdeen. They reach this round after dropping out of UCL qualifying, suffering a 6-0 aggregate defeat to Austrian Bundesliga side Sturm Graz.

Hradec Králové v Beşiktış

Hradec Králové face one of the biggest European nights in their modern history, banking on disciplined home form at the Malsovicka Arena. Containing Besiktas early and keeping the tie within reach going to Istanbul is the priority.

Beşiktış arrive full of confidence after cruising to a 3-0 aggregate victory over Denmark’s FC Midtjylland in the previous round. The Turkish giants hold the clear quality advantage in this tie.

Prediction: Beşiktış to win first leg.

Other ties to watch

PAOK v Anderlecht (20:45 EAT): Greek giants PAOK host Belgian side Anderlecht at the Toumba Stadium in what could be the tie of the round. Two serious European names, both capable of reaching the play-offs.

Jagiellonia v Rangers (19:00 EAT): Scottish Premiership side Rangers make the trip to Poland to face Jagiellonia. Rangers, who dropped from UCL qualifying, are among the most recognisable names in the draw.

Salzburg v Pafos (20:00 EAT): Red Bull Salzburg, one of the stronger seeds in the Main Path, host Cypriot side Pafos FC. Salzburg are expected to advance comfortably.

What happens next

Winners of these third qualifying round ties advance to the play-off round — the final hurdle before the league phase. Defeated clubs drop into the UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds and remain in European competition.
